Why Directory Submissions Get Rejected (and How to Fix Each Reason)

Why directory submissions get rejected and how to fix each reason: fit, badges, unfinished sites, duplicates, thin copy, broken URLs. Plus site-specific rules we confirmed on 12 directories and how many submissions actually go live.

Guide cover: Why directory submissions get rejected, with a chart card titled "What stands in the way"
By Pruthvi RajOctober 5, 2026

Directory submissions get rejected for a short list of fixable reasons: the product isn't a fit for that directory (B2C on a B2B site, non-SaaS on a SaaS-only one), a required badge or backlink is missing, the site looks unfinished, it's a duplicate of an existing listing, the description is thin, copied or hyped, the URL is broken or redirects, or the product is still in beta where that isn't allowed. Before that, many submissions never complete at all: in our catalog of 394 directories, 30% of free routes require a badge, 23% require an account first and 15% show a CAPTCHA.

Below: each rejection reason with a fix, the friction stats from our catalog, and a pre-submission check.

What stands between you and a directory listing: badge, login, CAPTCHA and paid-only shares
Friction across 394 active directories in our catalog. These cause more incomplete submissions than outright rejections.

The reasons, and how to fix each

Common rejection reasons and fixes
Most rejections are predictable. Check these before you submit.

1. Not a fit. Read eligibility first:

  • G2: B2B only, no B2C, alpha or beta products
  • SaaSworthy: "exclusively available to SaaS products"
  • DevHunt: developer tools only
  • Show HN: something people can try. No landing pages or sign-up walls.

2. Missing badge or backlink. Free routes on sites like Fazier and StartupBase require their badge on your homepage or footer. Add it before submitting and keep it up. Reviewers check.

3. Unfinished site. Placeholder copy, "coming soon", broken pages or no clear product. Most directories want a working, public product.

4. Duplicate. Search the directory for your name and domain first. If a listing exists (often auto-created), claim it instead of resubmitting.

5. Thin, copied or hyped description. "Revolutionary AI platform" with no specifics, or text identical to 50 other directories. Write for that audience (how).

6. Broken or redirecting URL. Use the final HTTPS URL. Avoid shortened links, tracking redirects or staging hosts. Product Hunt explicitly disallows shortened and tracking links.

7. Beta or not yet usable. Some directories (G2 among them) reject beta products. Use beta-friendly sites (BetaList) until you're generally available.

Site-specific rules that cause rejections

Most rejections come from a rule the founder didn't read. These are the ones we confirmed on each site's own pages in October 2026:

Site Rule that trips people up
G2 B2B only; no B2C, alpha or beta products
DevHunt Developer tools only; no NSFW or fake-engagement services
SaaSworthy "Exclusively available to SaaS products"
Show HN No landing pages, sign-up pages, blog posts or fundraisers; it must be tryable
Product Hunt No company accounts; no shortened or UTM links in the URL field; no emojis in the name
Peerlist Verified profile and a 100%-complete project, or you can't launch at all
Fazier (free) A Fazier badge on your homepage or footer
StartupBase (free) A StartupBase badge on your site
TinyLaunch Name max 30 characters, tagline max 60, logo required
Uneed (free line) An upvote score of 10 to stay published
Smithery Public HTTPS and Streamable HTTP; a 403 on the scan fails it
mcp.so A repository URL; the right project type

How many submissions don't make it

Directories rarely publish rejection rates, but one gave us a hint. Launch Llama says 6,078 tools have been submitted, and its sitemap listed 4,353 product pages on 5 October 2026. That's roughly 7 in 10 submissions live, with the other 30% pending, rejected or duplicates. Expect a similar share to stall elsewhere, and track each one so you can fix and resubmit.

Friction that stops submissions finishing

Friction Share of directories What to do
Badge required for the free route 30% (of 341 known) Decide your badge policy up front, or pay to skip where worthwhile
Account required before the form 23% (of 328 known) Use a dedicated launch email and password manager
CAPTCHA on the form 15% Batch these into one session
Paid-only 14% Only pay where traffic and relevance justify it (quality checks)

Pre-submission check (two minutes)

  • Eligible for this directory?
  • Already listed? (search name and domain)
  • Badge in place if the free route needs one?
  • Site public, working, no placeholder copy?
  • Description written for this audience, within limits?
  • Final HTTPS URL, no redirects?
  • Pricing label accurate?

If you're rejected

Note the reason in your tracker, fix the cause, and resubmit only once, unless the directory invites more. Don't create duplicate submissions while one is under review.

A worked example

A founder submits a habit-tracking app to 20 directories in an afternoon and gets 7 rejections or stalls:

Directory type Outcome Cause Fix
B2B review site Rejected Consumer app on a B2B-only site Skip. Wrong fit
SaaS-only directory Rejected Mobile app, not SaaS Skip, or list the web version if it exists
Launch platform (free route) Pending for weeks Badge not on the site Add the badge to the footer
Startup directory Rejected Duplicate: auto-created listing existed Claim the existing listing
AI directory Rejected "AI-powered" in the name, no AI in the product Remove the claim
Two directories Stalled CAPTCHA and email verification left unfinished Batch "needs you" items into one session

Four of the seven were avoidable with a two-minute eligibility check, and the other three with a tracker that surfaces stalled steps (tracker guide).

Not a rejection: the listing is live but invisible

Sometimes a submission is accepted but never appears in search or category pages. Usually it's in a low-priority queue, the category is wrong, or the listing page isn't indexed. Check the live URL, the category, and whether a site: search finds it, then email the directory if it's been more than a few weeks.

FAQ

Why was my directory submission rejected? Most often: wrong fit, missing badge, unfinished site, duplicate listing, weak description, bad URL, or beta status.

Can I resubmit after a rejection? Usually yes, once you've fixed the cause. Don't create duplicates while a review is open.

Do directories reject AI-generated descriptions? They reject thin, generic or hyped descriptions. Specific, accurate copy gets accepted however it's drafted.

What percentage of directory submissions get rejected? Few directories publish it. One data point: Launch Llama lists 6,078 submitted tools and had 4,353 live product pages in October 2026, so about 7 in 10 submissions were live.

Why was my Show HN removed? Usually because it linked to a landing page, sign-up page or article instead of something people could try. Show HN is only for things you made that people can use now.
