What is a CAPTCHA?
A CAPTCHA is a challenge a website uses to tell humans from bots before allowing an action, like submitting a form. Classic ones ask you to read distorted text or pick images; modern ones such as Cloudflare Turnstile and reCAPTCHA v3 mostly run invisibly. 56 of the 352 directory flows we recorded had one.
The name
CAPTCHA stands for Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart, coined at Carnegie Mellon in 2003.
Types you'll meet on directory forms
| Type | How it works | Seen in our flows |
|---|---|---|
| Cloudflare Turnstile | Mostly invisible browser checks | 35 |
| Google reCAPTCHA | Checkbox, image grid or invisible score | 21 |
| hCaptcha | Image challenges, privacy-focused | 3 |
In total, 56 of 352 directory submit flows (16%) showed some CAPTCHA.
CAPTCHAs and agents
CAPTCHAs exist to stop automated submissions, so trying to solve or bypass them with software goes against the site's intent and usually its terms. A responsible submission agent stops and asks you to complete the check, then continues. Agents running in your own everyday browser trigger fewer challenges than server-run headless browsers, because invisible checks see a normal user.
Example
An agent submitting to 40 directories meets 6 CAPTCHAs. Four Turnstile checks pass invisibly in the founder's own browser; two reCAPTCHA image grids appear, and the agent pauses for her to solve them.
FAQ
Can AI agents solve CAPTCHAs?
Some can technically, but bypassing them breaks site rules. Good agents hand them to you.
Why do I keep getting CAPTCHAs?
VPNs, data-centre IPs, automation flags, blocked cookies and unusual behaviour raise suspicion.
Are CAPTCHAs accessible?
Older ones have accessibility problems; invisible checks and audio options help.
