How to Relaunch a SaaS Product (and When It Counts as a Relaunch)
How to relaunch a SaaS product: whether it's really a relaunch, the rules on Product Hunt (six months, significant update), Uneed ($15), Microlaunch and Show HN, a relaunch plan, and how to judge it.

Relaunch a SaaS product when something genuinely new exists for users: a new use case, a new platform (mobile app, API) or a rebuild with new capabilities. A new UI, a pricing change or a handful of features isn't enough, and platforms like Product Hunt explicitly reject those as relaunches. Tell the story as what users can do now that they couldn't before, start with existing users, follow each platform's relaunch rules, and update every listing you already have.
Here's how to decide whether you have a relaunch, the rules on the main platforms, and a relaunch plan.

Is it really a relaunch?
| Counts | Doesn't count |
|---|---|
| A new mobile or desktop app | A redesigned UI |
| A new use case or a new buyer | A pricing change |
| A rebuild with new capabilities | A few new features |
| An open-source release or public API | An AI feature bolted onto the same workflow |
| A pivot to a new market | A rebrand alone |
The test: would someone who saw your first launch see a different product? If you can't write the change as one sentence a stranger understands, it's an update. Ship it, email your users, and post a changelog instead.
Platform rules
| Platform | Relaunch rule |
|---|---|
| Product Hunt | 6+ months since the last post for the same product, company or root domain, plus a significant update. Earlier relaunches need a request and review (details) |
| Uneed | Relaunch an existing product for $15 (one free per month on Pro) (guide) |
| Microlaunch | Paid packs include unlimited relaunches for major feature releases (guide) |
| Hacker News (Show HN) | Minor versions aren't Show HNs, but a major overhaul probably is (guide) |
| TinyLaunch, Fazier, PeerPush | Generally allow new launches of updated products. Check current terms (TinyLaunch) |
Relaunch rules across platforms
| Platform | Can you relaunch? | Rule or cost |
|---|---|---|
| Product Hunt | Yes | 6 months after the last post for the product, company or root domain, and only for a significant update |
| Uneed | Yes | $15 per relaunch; Pro ($99/year) includes one free relaunch a month |
| Microlaunch | Yes | Unlimited relaunches on the paid packs, meant for major releases |
| Hacker News | Rarely | Minor updates aren't Show HNs; "a major overhaul is probably ok" |
| Fazier, TinyLaunch, PeerPush | Varies | Check the current rules; most treat a relaunch as a new paid launch |
| Directories and review sites | Not a launch | Update the existing listing instead (how) |
The relaunch plan
- Write the one-sentence change: "Now [Product] also [does new job] for [new user]."
- Existing users first: email them, get them using the new thing, and collect testimonials about it specifically.
- New assets: a new tagline, gallery and demo video that lead with what's new. Reusing old screenshots undercuts the story.
- Launch in waves: one main platform, then communities and smaller platforms (30-day plan).
- Update every existing listing: directories, review sites and marketplaces still show the old product (how to update listings).
The first comment or announcement
Lead with what changed and why:
We first launched [Product] [X months] ago to [original job]. The most common request since was [request]. Today we're launching [new thing]: [what it does]. Here's what's different…
Acknowledge the first launch. People who saw it respect the honesty, and newcomers get context.
Product Hunt's rules, in its own words

Product Hunt is the strictest of the major platforms, so plan relaunches around it: put the relaunch at least six months after the last post for that product (or any product on the same root domain), and make sure the change passes its "substantially different use case or user" test. Full details: Product Hunt relaunch rules.
How to judge a relaunch
A relaunch should be measured against your first launch, not against other products:
- Signups and activation from the relaunch week vs the first launch week, by source.
- Returning users: how many people from the first launch came back to try the new version.
- Comments that mention the change. If nobody notices what's new, the change wasn't big enough, or the post didn't explain it.
- Ranking, last. On Product Hunt in September–October 2026, #5 of the day needed a median of 191 upvotes. A relaunch that lands lower but brings the right users still worked.
Relaunch mistakes
- Relaunching a redesign. New UIs don't count on Product Hunt, and users notice it's the same product.
- Reusing the old gallery and tagline. Lead with the new part.
- Forgetting the root-domain rule. A sister product on the same domain blocks you for six months.
- Not telling last time's supporters. They're your warmest audience. Write to them personally.
- Relaunching everywhere on the same day. Spread it over two weeks, like a first launch.
A worked example
A note-taking app launched on Product Hunt in March as a web app. In October it ships native iOS and Android apps with offline sync:
- Qualifies? Yes. A new mobile app is Product Hunt's own example of a significant update, and it's more than six months later.
- Story: "Your notes now work offline on your phone."
- Sequence: email existing users first with a direct install link, collect App Store reviews in the first week, then relaunch on Product Hunt, then submit the app to mobile-focused directories and update every existing listing with the new platforms.
Compare that with a team that redesigns its dashboard and adds dark mode: that's a changelog post and an email to users, not a relaunch.

FAQ
When should I relaunch my SaaS? When there's a new use case, platform or capability, not just a new UI or pricing change.
Can I relaunch on Product Hunt? After six months with a significant update. Earlier relaunches need a request that Product Hunt reviews.
How do I announce a relaunch? Lead with what users can now do, acknowledge the first launch, and start with your existing users.
Can I relaunch on Uneed? Yes. A relaunch costs $15, and Uneed Pro includes one free relaunch a month.
How long should I wait before relaunching? Six months on Product Hunt, and only with a significant update. Smaller platforms are more flexible, but the update should still be worth announcing.
