Guide cover: How to write an AI tool directory listing, with a table card titled "Weak vs strong"
By Pruthvi RajOctober 4, 2026Updated November 2, 2026

A good AI tool directory listing says what the AI does (its input and output) in the tagline, not that it's "AI-powered". Pick one or two specific categories instead of every tag available, label pricing accurately (a trial isn't "free"), and show the output in screenshots, not a logo on a gradient. AI directories are crowded: our catalog alone has 131 AI tool directories, and most list thousands of near-identical "AI assistants". Specificity is what gets clicked.

Below: field-by-field guidance with weak and strong examples, how AI directories differ from general ones, and where to submit.

Anatomy of an AI tool directory listing: weak vs strong for each field
Six fields. In each, the strong version names a concrete input and output.

Field by field

Name. Just the name. "AcmeAI – Best AI Tool for Everything" gets edited or rejected.

Tagline. Input → output, for whom:

  • Weak: "AI-powered productivity platform"
  • Strong: "Summarise sales calls into CRM notes"
  • Strong: "Turn product photos into on-model fashion shots"

Description. Answer four questions in about 300–500 characters:

  1. What goes in? (a call recording, a PDF, a product photo)
  2. What comes out? (notes in HubSpot, a cleaned dataset, a video)
  3. Who is it for?
  4. What doesn't it do? AI tool buyers have been burned before, and limits build trust.

Categories. One or two precise ones (for example "Sales" and "Meeting notes"). Spraying ten categories makes you irrelevant in all of them, and some directories penalise it.

Pricing tag. Use the directory's labels accurately:

Your model Label
Free forever tier Freemium
Time-limited trial, then paid Free trial / Paid
Paid only Paid
Open source and self-hostable Open source / Free

Wrong pricing labels are a common reason AI listings get flagged or edited.

Screenshots and video. Show the output: the generated summary, the edited image, the finished video. A 30-second clip of the input → output transformation outperforms any interface tour.

How AI directories differ

  • Volume: many AI directories list thousands of tools, and new ones appear weekly. Expect less attention per listing than on a launch platform.
  • Quality varies a lot: check traffic and editorial standards before paying (quality checks). In our catalog, 58% of all directories get under 10,000 visits a month.
  • Free routes are common: most AI directories offer a free listing, some with a badge requirement. Paid options usually buy speed or featured placement.
  • Big ones have their own rules: for example, There's An AI For That is paid.

The biggest AI directories

AI-related directories in our catalog: 131 AI tools directories, 10 AI agents directories, 8 MCP registries
AI tools directories are the largest single category in our catalog: a third of all directories.

With 131 AI tools directories in our catalog alone, you can't do them all well, and you don't need to. Pick the ones with real traffic and a category that matches your tool. Our free directory audit ranks them for your product, including which are free, which need a badge, and which are paid.

The 12 biggest AI directories, and what they charge

AI Top Tools 54 ~163K No $59 instant

Seven of the 12 biggest charge to list at all. Across all 131 AI directories, the 109 one-time paid options we've recorded have a median price of about $30 (the middle half run from $16 to $70). The big names cost more because they have the traffic.

What we'd pay for

  • There's An AI For That if you can afford one paid listing. Its traffic is in a different league from everything else (about five times the next one).
  • One or two of the $47–$99 tier (Toolify, TopAI.tools, AIxploria) if your tool's category is well represented there.
  • Every free option with real traffic (Future Tools, What's the Big Data, Dang AI's free route, AI Valley).
  • Skip paid listings on directories under about 20,000 visits a month unless you've checked they send traffic to tools like yours. The median AI directory in our catalog gets about 5,700 visits a month.

A complete example

Name: Callnote Tagline: Summarise sales calls into HubSpot notes Description: Callnote joins your Zoom or Google Meet calls, transcribes them, and writes a structured summary (next steps, objections, budget, timeline) into the right HubSpot deal within a minute of hanging up. Built for sales teams of 2–20 people. It doesn't record calls without consent prompts, and it doesn't support Salesforce yet. Free for 10 calls a month; Pro from $19 per user. Categories: Sales, Meeting assistants Pricing tag: Freemium Screenshot 1: a finished summary inside a HubSpot deal

Every field answers a buyer's question. Nothing says "AI-powered", because the description already shows what the AI does.

Mistakes that make AI listings disappear

  • "AI-powered" as the whole description. Every tool in the directory is AI-powered. Say what the AI does.
  • No pricing. AI directories filter on Free, Freemium and Paid. A missing label hides you from filtered lists.
  • The wrong category. "Productivity" is huge. "Meeting notes" or "Sales calls" is where buyers browse.
  • Paying for "featured" before you have reviews or a demo. Featured spots bring visits, not trust.
  • No demo video or screenshots of real output. AI tools are judged on output. Show it.
  • Submitting to 100 directories at once with identical copy. Adapt the first sentence per directory (how).
