What is an AI tools directory?

An AI tools directory is a website that lists AI products, usually organised by task such as writing, images, coding or sales, with a page per tool, its pricing and a link. People use them to find a tool for a job. They are the largest and most uneven group of directories in our catalog.

How AI tool directories work

You submit your tool with a name, URL, tagline, description, task categories, pricing model and a screenshot. The directory reviews it and publishes a page. Visitors arrive by searching the directory for a task ("AI for meeting notes"), from the directory's own SEO pages, or from newsletters many directories run.

What the numbers look like

We checked 122 AI tool directories by hand. Their median Domain Rating is 42, 70% give a dofollow link, 70% have a free route and 19% ask for a badge. Traffic is concentrated: There's An AI For That, Toolify, Future Tools and a few others get most of the visits, while the long tail gets a few thousand visits a month or less.

Many AI directories charge for a listing or for speed. The big ones can be worth a one-time fee if your audience searches there. For the small ones, the free route plus a badge or a short wait is usually enough. Paying a small directory for a dofollow link is buying a link, which Google's spam policies count as link spam.

Common mistake

Writing a listing that describes the technology instead of the job. People browse AI directories by task. "Turns your Zoom calls into follow-up emails" gets clicks; "An LLM-powered productivity platform" doesn't. Our guide on writing an AI tool listing goes further, and our ranked list of AI tool directories shows traffic, DR and cost for each.

How listings rank inside a directory

Most AI directories order tools in a category by a mix of recency, saves or upvotes, and payment. Paid "featured" slots sit at the top of category pages and in newsletters. Free listings usually appear by date, so they get the most views in the first days and then sink. That's why the category you pick matters more than anything else: a narrow, accurate category where your tool is one of twenty beats a broad one where it's one of two thousand.

A short checklist for each listing

  • Pick the narrowest category that fits, and add secondary tags if the form allows.
  • Lead the description with the job and the result, then the how.
  • State pricing clearly: free, freemium or paid, with the starting price.
  • Use a real screenshot of the product doing the job, not a logo on a gradient.
  • Add a short demo video if the form accepts one; AI tools are easier to trust once seen working.

FAQ

What is the biggest AI tools directory?

There's An AI For That is the biggest by traffic in our checks, followed by sites like Toolify and Future Tools.

Are AI tool directories free?

70% of the ones we checked have a free route. Some of the biggest charge for a listing or a faster review.

Do AI directories help SEO?

The ones with real traffic and a dofollow link do. Most of the long tail adds little beyond a backlink.

How long does an AI directory take to approve a listing?

From minutes to several weeks. Free queues on popular AI directories are often long, which is what their paid fast-track options sell.

Should I list on every AI directory?

No. List on the ones with real traffic that cover your task first, then add smaller ones if you have time. Dozens of tiny directories add little.
