How to Submit to Launch Llama (2026): Free vs $39 Instant Launch, and the 20-Upvote Backlink Rule

Launch Llama lists tools free in about four weeks. Its dofollow link only switched on at about 20 upvotes in our check of 50 listings, even on the $39 plan. Plans, steps, link data and what we'd do.

Guide cover: How to submit to Launch Llama: free vs $39 Instant Launch, with a key numbers card titled "Launch Llama at a glance"
By Pruthvi RajOctober 4, 2026Updated November 2, 2026

Launch Llama is free to list on, but free tools wait about four weeks for review, and the dofollow link isn't automatic. When we checked 50 live listings on 5 October 2026, the link only lost its nofollow once a listing had about 20 upvotes, on every plan, including the $39 Instant Launch. Featured ($99 a month, or $49 a week) gets you pinned placement and a newsletter slot.

So the real decision isn't free vs paid. It's whether you can get 20 upvotes, or finish top 5 in a weekly leaderboard. Here's how Launch Llama works, what each plan buys, how the link rule plays out on real listings, and when we'd pay.

Launch Llama at a glance

Launch Llama
Submit tools.launchllama.co/submit (account required)
Free option 1 listing, reviewed and published in about 4 weeks
Instant Launch $39 one-time: skip the queue, "guaranteed GSC indexing"

Featured Pro $149/month: up to 10 listings, guaranteed monthly newsletter placement
Link nofollow until roughly 20 upvotes or a weekly top-5 finish, then followed (our check, 50 listings)
Domain Rating 72 (our Ahrefs check; Launch Llama says "DA 73")
Traffic ~9,500 visits/month (3-month SimilarWeb average). Launch Llama claims 95,000 from Cloudflare
Newsletter 65,000+ subscribers (Launch Llama's figure)
Listings 6,078 "tools submitted"; 4,353 product pages in its sitemap on 5 Oct 2026

What Launch Llama is

Launch Llama is a founder newsletter with a tools directory at tools.launchllama.co, run independently by Tom Otto. The directory leans heavily toward AI tools, developer tools and small SaaS. Scroll the "Launched this week" feed and you'll mostly see one-founder products, with upvote counts in the single and low double digits.

Three things make it different from a plain listing site:

  • The newsletter is the real audience. The directory itself gets modest traffic. The 65,000-subscriber Friday email is where Launch Llama's reach is, and you get into it either by winning the week, by paying for Featured, or by buying an ad.
  • It runs as a weekly competition. Upvotes reset on Sunday at 00:00 UTC, and the leaderboard decides who gets the newsletter feature and the followed link.
  • It's built for agents. Launch Llama has a public REST API and an MCP server that let an AI agent search the catalog, run a "launch readiness" check and open a listing draft. The agent can't publish. The founder finishes from an emailed link.

How Launch Llama works

The review queue

A free submission goes into a review queue of about four weeks. Launch Llama says it reviews "for quality and relevance". Paying for Instant Launch or Featured skips the queue and publishes immediately. Free listings that go live are labelled Community listing, paid one-time listings Instant Launch listing, and subscriptions Featured Tool.

The gap between 6,078 "tools submitted" and 4,353 product pages in the sitemap suggests that roughly 7 in 10 submissions end up as live pages. Some of the difference is pending queue, some is rejection, and some is duplicates. Launch Llama doesn't publish a rejection rate.

Upvotes and the weekly leaderboard

Launch Llama weekly leaderboard: #1 gets a free newsletter feature, top 5 a dofollow backlink, top 15 higher homepage visibility
The weekly leaderboard on 5 October. The top five were winning with 11 to 14 votes.

The leaderboard spells out the rewards:

  • #1 of the week: a free feature in the newsletter.
  • Top 5: a dofollow backlink.
  • Top 15: higher placement on the homepage.

The bar is low. On 5 October the top five had 11 to 14 votes each. A founder with a small X following or a Discord can realistically win a week, which is the most useful thing to know about Launch Llama.

The badge

Adding the Launch Llama badge to your site is optional. Launch Llama says it "helps verification on the free listing path" and makes you eligible for free homepage placement and newsletter nomination. Its developer docs also mention "free badge/upvote gates" that partner API submissions skip, so the badge does play a role in the free route. If you'd rather not put a badge on your landing page, you can still be listed.

Listing pages

Each product gets a page with an overview, reviews, alternatives, team and FAQ tabs, a weekly upvote counter and a "Visit website" button. The button carries UTM parameters, so Launch Llama traffic shows up as its own source in your analytics.

Note the newsletter detail on Featured: the claimable slot goes to "20,000+ founders", not the full 65,000 list. Only Featured Pro and paid ads promise the whole list.

The upsells you'll see

Launch Llama sells two more things on its pricing page:

  • Newsletter ads: $199 for one send or $499 for three, each with custom copy and a LinkedIn and X post. Launch Llama quotes an "average ROAS of 1.4 to 4.8x". That's their number, not one we could verify.
  • Directory submission packages: $99 for 30 directories, $149 for 60 and $199 for 100+. Launch Llama advertises an "average increase of 28 DR".
Launch Llama's directory submission packages: Starter $99 for 30 directories, Pro $149 for 60, Premium $199 for 100+
The add-on directory packages. They are a separate service, not part of your Launch Llama listing.

The packages are a separate done-for-you service and have nothing to do with your Launch Llama listing. Before buying any package like this, ask for the list of directories and check it against how to judge directory backlink quality. A DR jump of 28 is plausible from a very low starting point and unlikely from DR 30+.

How to submit, field by field

You need an account first (the submit page redirects to sign-in). The form takes about five minutes.

Name and URL

Use your product name exactly as it appears on your site, and your canonical homepage URL. Launch Llama adds its own UTM parameters to the outbound link, so don't add yours.

Tagline

Look at the live feed and you'll notice almost every listing follows the same pattern: "For [audience]: [product] does [job] so you [outcome]." For example, "For developers: Offrun centralizes multiple AI coding agents in one workspace". Launch Llama appears to rewrite or prompt for this shape, so write it yourself and you control the wording. Keep it to one sentence. Our guide to writing a directory description has more on wording that survives editing.

Description

A few short paragraphs: what it does, who it's for, the main features, and pricing. Founders skim, so lead with the concrete job. Avoid "revolutionary" and "all-in-one". Directories like this one get hundreds of those.

Categories

Pick two or three. Listings show them as breadcrumbs (for example "Artificial Intelligence · Productivity · Developer Tools"). The category hubs are among the pages that carry internal links to your listing, so choose ones that match.

Logo, screenshots and video

A square logo and two or three real product screenshots. A short demo video gets embedded on the listing page, and listings with a video look noticeably more finished in the feed.

Choose a plan

At the end you pick free, add Instant Launch, or go Featured. If you're unsure, start free.

Or let an agent draft it

If you work with Claude Code, Cursor or another MCP client, Launch Llama's MCP server can run check_launch_readiness on your URL and then submit_product to open a draft. Launch Llama emails you a link to finish and submit. It never publishes on its own, so you still review the copy.

Launch Llama's FAQ says every published listing, free or paid, gets "a permanent dofollow backlink". The live site says something narrower. Its leaderboard offers a dofollow link to the weekly top 5, and its own llms.txt mentions "DA 73 backlinks at 20 upvotes".

We checked the "Visit website" link on 50 listings on 5 October 2026:

Listing type Followed nofollow Upvotes on followed Upvotes on nofollow
Community (free) 6 7 38 to 231 1 to 12
Instant Launch ($39) 8 9 21 to 35 2 to 11
Featured 4 0 51 to 149 –
Imported from Product Hunt 0 16 – 81 to 877

The pattern is clean: every free or Instant Launch listing with 21 or more upvotes had a followed link, and every one with 12 or fewer was nofollow. Paying $39 didn't change that. Listings Launch Llama imported from Product Hunt were all nofollow, even with hundreds of upvotes.

One oddity: Offrun sat at #2 on the leaderboard with a "DOFOLLOW" tag, while its own page still served nofollow. That week ended on Sunday 11 October, so the change may only apply at the reset. Check your listing after the reset rather than on launch day.

Two more things to keep in mind:

  • DR 72 is the whole domain, not your page. A brand-new listing page has few links of its own. Its value comes from Launch Llama linking to it internally (category hubs, the leaderboard, the newsletter archive), and from the newsletter if you're featured.
  • Traffic is modest. Independent estimates put the directory at about 9,500 visits a month, ten times below the Cloudflare figure on the site. Expect dozens of visitors from a normal listing, not thousands. A newsletter feature is the exception.

To check your own link, open your listing, right-click "Visit website", choose Inspect, and look at the rel attribute. If it contains nofollow, you're not there yet.

What happens after you submit

  1. Confirmation. Your submission shows in your Launch Llama dashboard, which tracks its status.
  2. Review. About four weeks on the free route. Instant Launch and Featured publish straight away.
  3. Live as a listing. Your page goes up with a "Listed [month]" date and starts collecting upvotes in the current week.
  4. The weekly race. Upvotes count toward the week ending Sunday 00:00 UTC. That's your window for the top-5 link and the #1 newsletter feature.
  5. After the reset. Check the rel on your link, and check your analytics for utm_source traffic from Launch Llama.

Plan your upvote push for the week your listing goes live. If you're on the free route, you won't know the exact go-live date, so keep an eye on your email and dashboard.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Free listings are permanent.
  • Winning a week is realistic: the top 5 needed 11 to 14 votes when we looked.
  • A real newsletter audience, and a free path into it.
  • Listing pages are indexable (index, follow) and well structured.
  • An API and MCP server, if you launch with an agent.

Cons

  • Four-week wait on the free route.
  • The FAQ's "dofollow on every plan" doesn't match the live link behaviour.
  • Paying $39 doesn't guarantee a followed link.
  • Directory traffic is about a tenth of what the site claims.
  • Heavy upsells on every page (newsletter ads, directory packages, a "Founder OS" bundle).

Common reasons submissions stall

  • Duplicates. If your product was imported from Product Hunt, you may already have a listing. Search the catalog before submitting.
  • Thin listings. No screenshots, a one-line description, or a holding page instead of a working product.
  • Off-topic products. The audience is founders and builders. Consumer apps unrelated to work struggle to get votes even when approved.
  • Launching with no one to tell. A listing that collects 2 upvotes stays nofollow and drops off the weekly feed in days.

More causes, across directories, in why directory submissions get rejected.

Launch Llama vs similar launch boards

Figures from AgentLaunch's catalog checks (DR via Ahrefs, visits as a 3-month SimilarWeb average).

Directory DR Visits/month Paid option Link
Launch Llama 72 ~9,500 $39 one-time, or $99/month Followed at ~20 upvotes or weekly top 5
Uneed 76 ~173,000 $14.99 or $29.99 to skip the line Dofollow on the product link
TinyLaunch 73 ~77,000 $39 premium launch, $15/week featured Dofollow
PeerPush 75 ~55,000 Free Dofollow
Fazier 83 ~87,000 $29, $49 or $99 one-time Mixed
MicroLaunch 64 ~93,000 Free Dofollow

On traffic alone, Launch Llama is the smallest board in this group. What it has that the others don't is the newsletter and a weekly race that's easy to win.

What we'd do

  • Submit free, and plan a launch week around it. Line up 20 to 30 people who'll upvote (customers, your X followers, a community you're active in), so you clear the threshold and have a shot at the top 5.
  • Pay $39 for Instant Launch only if timing matters. For example, when you're stacking it with a Product Hunt launch or a press push and want everything live the same week. Paying alone won't get you the link.
  • Skip Featured unless the newsletter reaches your buyers. At $99 a month, the claimable slot goes to 20,000 readers, not 65,000. Compare it with a single $199 ad send, and track either one with UTM-tagged links.
  • Skip the directory packages unless you've seen the list. Our catalog of dofollow directories for startups covers most of the same ground.

If you're submitting to a dozen launch boards like this, AgentLaunch's directory catalog shows each one's link type, review time and free route, and you can check your own Domain Rating with the DR checker before and after.
