How to Write a Product Hunt Tagline (60 Characters, No Hype)

Product Hunt taglines max out at 60 characters. A formula, before-and-after rewrites, and what 30 days of leaderboard data shows: winners average 49 characters, and over half mention AI. Ten real #1 taglines included.

A Product Hunt tagline can be at most 60 characters, and Product Hunt asks for "a very short description of the product — no gimmicks or over-the-top language". In practice, the taglines that work say what the product does, for whom, in plain words: "Turn meeting notes into Jira tickets automatically" (50 characters) beats "The future of productivity, reimagined". The tagline is "typically the main element that drives someone to click on a product from the homepage", per Product Hunt.

Here's a formula, before-and-after rewrites, and a checklist to test yours against.

The rules, from Product Hunt

Product Hunt's submission field rules for name, tagline and description
Product Hunt's own field rules: name only (no description or emojis), tagline max 60 characters, description max 500.
Field Limit Rule
Name – Only the product's name. No description or emojis unless they're part of the name
Tagline 60 characters Short description. No gimmicks or over-the-top language
Description 500 characters Value proposition and features

Product Hunt's own examples, for a cat-voicemail app: Good: "Send your friends a voicemail meow from a real cat." Not allowed: "The most ameozing app in the app store".

The formula

[Verb] + [specific outcome] + [for whom or where]

  • "Track every subscription you pay for in one place"
  • "Make app store screenshots from your Figma frames"
  • "Shared inbox for teams under 10 people"

Each one tells a stranger scrolling the homepage exactly what happens if they click.

What 30 days of winning taglines show

We read every Featured launch on Product Hunt's daily leaderboards from 5 September to 4 October 2026 (459 launches) and compared the taglines of the top five each day with the rest.

Top 5 of the day Everyone else
Median length 49 characters 50 characters
Middle half of lengths 43–55 characters similar
Mentions AI, agents or LLMs 55% 31%
Uses "your" 33% 34%

Three things stand out:

  1. Length doesn't decide it. Winners and the rest both sit around 50 characters. Use the space you need, up to the 60-character limit, and don't trim a clear tagline to look punchy.
  2. AI is crowded at the top. More than half of top-five taglines mentioned AI or agents, partly because so many launches are AI products. If yours is AI, "AI" alone won't distinguish you. Say what it does.
  3. Plain beats clever. The #1 taglines read like job descriptions, not slogans.

Here are ten #1-of-the-day taglines from that month, with their length:

Product Tagline Characters
dif.sh Markdown feature flags your coding agent installs for you 57
AI Toolbox 3.0 Search, organize and export every AI chat in one place 54
Switch Bring any AI agent into Slack, Teams & Discord 46
Mastra Factory From issue to production, run by agents. 40
Typewise Nova AI customer experience that builds and improves itself 54
Anysite.io Build and enrich B2B lists by chatting to your agent 52
Youkti Finds who's ready to buy, then tells you what to do next 56
Resurf A Personal Context Library for Mac 34
Monospace from Directus The governed API layer for every app, person, and agent 55
PR Lens by Coldtea.ai See code through a new lens 27

Most name a concrete object (feature flags, AI chats, B2B lists) and a concrete outcome. The shortest one, "See code through a new lens", is the exception that relies on the product name to explain itself.

Six tests for your tagline

  1. Stranger test: would someone who's never heard of you know what it does?
  2. No category words alone: "AI-powered platform" says nothing. Say what the AI does.
  3. No superlatives: "best", "revolutionary" and "ultimate" break Product Hunt's rule and read as noise.
  4. Under 60, not near 60: 40–55 characters reads cleanly on mobile.
  5. Doesn't repeat the name: the name is right next to it.
  6. Matches the gallery: the first gallery image should show the tagline happening.

Tagline mistakes we see most

  • Category words only. "AI-powered productivity platform" fits thousands of products.
  • Repeating the product name. The name sits right above the tagline.
  • Hype words. "Revolutionary", "next-gen", "game-changing". Product Hunt asks for no over-the-top language.
  • Emojis and exclamation marks. Product Hunt's guidelines discourage gimmicks, and they read as ads.
  • Describing the technology instead of the result. "RAG pipeline for documents" vs "Ask questions across all your PDFs".
  • Using the full 60 characters for a list. "Notes, tasks, docs, wikis, chat and calendars" says nothing about why.

Write 20, pick one

Write 20 versions in ten minutes, then test the top three:

  • Read them to someone outside your industry and ask what the product does.
  • Post them in a founder community and ask which one they'd click.
  • Check them against recent Product of the Day taglines. Most are concrete and boring in the best way.

Where the tagline shows up

On the homepage list, in search, in the daily email, and in social cards when people share your launch. It's the most-read piece of copy in your launch, so spend longer on it than on the description.

Tagline patterns that work

Pattern Example
Verb + outcome "Turn meeting notes into Jira tickets automatically"
Outcome + for whom "Invoicing for freelance designers"
Thing + differentiator "A CRM that runs from a single spreadsheet"
Replace X "Calendly for clinics, with no-show protection"
Number + outcome "Ship app store screenshots in 2 minutes"

Taglines for different product types

  • Developer tools: be technical. "Postgres branching for preview deployments" beats "Supercharge your dev workflow".
  • AI products: name the input and output. "Turn product photos into on-model shots" beats "AI-powered fashion".
  • B2B SaaS: name the role or team. "Shared inbox for support teams under 10 people".
  • Consumer apps: name the moment. "Split rent and bills without awkward texts".

The tagline everywhere else

Once you've written it, reuse it: it's your directory tagline (most launch platforms cap at 60 too, such as TinyLaunch), the first line of your directory descriptions, and often the best landing-page headline you have.

FAQ

How long can a Product Hunt tagline be? 60 characters maximum.

Can I use emojis in my Product Hunt tagline? Product Hunt's rule bans gimmicks. Emojis aren't explicitly banned in taglines, but they're banned in the name unless they're part of it. Most top taglines don't use them.

What makes a good Product Hunt tagline? A plain description of what the product does and for whom, under 60 characters, with no hype.

How long are winning Product Hunt taglines? In our analysis of 30 days of daily leaderboards, the top five had a median tagline of 49 characters, and most fell between 43 and 55. The limit is 60.

Should my Product Hunt tagline mention AI? Only if it helps explain what the product does. Over half of top-five taglines mentioned AI or agents, so the word alone doesn't set you apart.
