What is Product of the Day?
Product of the Day is the award a launch platform gives to the top-ranked products on a given day. On Product Hunt, the top featured launches each day earn a #1, #2 or #3 Product of the Day badge. Ranking uses upvotes, comments, voter quality and timing, not raw vote counts alone.
How it's decided
Product Hunt says the daily ranking comes from a confidential algorithm that looks at upvotes, the time since posting and other signals. In practice, three things matter: votes from established accounts, real comments, and steady activity through the day. Votes from brand-new accounts, or votes that arrive in a suspicious burst from one link, count for little or get removed. Only featured launches can win.
What it took
We tracked 30 days of Product Hunt leaderboards (459 featured launches, 5 September to 4 October 2026):
| Daily rank | Median votes | Range |
|---|---|---|
| #1 | 443 | 251 to 1,855 |
| #3 | 292 | |
| #5 | 191 | |
| #10 | 110 |
The range is wide because the day matters: a quiet Saturday can be won with a fraction of the votes a crowded Tuesday needs. Comments followed the same pattern, with a median of 61 for #1 products, 32 for the top five and 8 for everyone else.
What the badge is worth
On the day: a place at the top of the homepage, the daily newsletter and social posts, which is where most of the traffic comes from. After the day: a badge for your site, a line in your pitch deck and a slightly better chance of being picked up by newsletters and journalists who scan the winners. The traffic itself fades within days.
Example
A developer tool launches on a Saturday with a prepared community of a few hundred users, a first comment that tells the story of the product, and the founders replying to every comment. It finishes #2 with fewer votes than the #8 product had on the Tuesday before. The badge goes on its pricing page; the launch brings a few thousand visitors over three days and its first hundred sign-ups.
Common mistake
Chasing votes instead of conversations. Asking people to "upvote us" through a direct link triggers Product Hunt's vote-ring checks. Ask them to look, try it and leave honest feedback. See is Product Hunt worth it and our Product Hunt statistics.
Day of week matters
The busiest weekdays attract the most launches from funded companies with large audiences, so the votes needed for the top three are highest Tuesday to Thursday. Weekends are quieter on both sides: fewer visitors, but a top-three finish needs far fewer votes. If your goal is the badge and the newsletter mention, a weekend can be the smarter pick; if your goal is the most visitors, a weekday top-ten can beat a weekend #1.
Product of the Week and Month
Product Hunt also ranks the week and the month. Weekly and monthly winners are usually the daily winners that kept getting attention after their day, often from newsletters and press. They get their own badges and appear in the weekly email, which reaches a large audience of early adopters and investors.
