What is a submission tracker?
A submission tracker is a list, spreadsheet or tool that records every directory you submitted to, with the date, status, listing URL, link type and any follow-up. Without one, approvals, rejections and badge requirements get lost across dozens of sites and inboxes.
Columns that matter
| Column | Why |
|---|---|
| Directory and submit URL | Where you submitted |
| Date | When to follow up |
| Status | Submitted, pending, live, rejected, needs action |
| Listing URL | Proof it's live, and where to edit |
| Link type | Dofollow, nofollow, after badge |
| Account and login | Which email you used |
| Cost | Free, badge, paid |
| Notes | Rejection reason, queue date |
Keeping it current
Check pending submissions after two weeks, and the whole list every few months: listings disappear, directories die and links change type. When you update your product, use the listing URLs to update every listing; see updating details across directories.
What it tells you
Combined with analytics referral traffic, the tracker shows which directories sent visitors and sign-ups. That decides where to put paid budget next time and which directories to skip. Our guide on tracking directory submissions has a template.
Example
Two months after launch, a founder's tracker shows 52 submissions: 41 live, 6 rejected (4 fixable), 5 still pending. Three of the live listings brought 70% of directory sign-ups. Next quarter she pays for a featured slot on one of those three and skips the rest.
FAQ
Is a spreadsheet enough?
Yes, for most founders. Tools add reminders and status checks.
How often should I update it?
As you submit, then check pending ones every two weeks.
Should I track nofollow listings?
Yes. They still send visitors and need updating.
