What is a directory submission service?
A directory submission service is a company or freelancer that submits your product to a list of directories for a fee. Prices range from tens to hundreds of dollars for 50 to 500 directories. Quality varies widely: good ones use real, relevant directories; bad ones pad the count with link farms.
How they work
You fill in one form with your product details. The service submits to its list over days or weeks and sends a report: directory, date, status and listing URL. Some write a description per directory; most paste the same one everywhere.
How to judge one
| Good sign | Bad sign |
|---|---|
| Publishes the directory list with traffic and link type | Only quotes a number ("500 directories") |
| Report with live listing URLs | Report with screenshots of forms |
| Adapts copy to each audience | One description pasted everywhere |
| Excludes dead sites and link farms | Promises a DR increase |
Of the 352 directories we checked by hand, 214 give a dofollow link and only 58 get more than 100K visits a month. A list of 500 has to go far beyond the useful ones.
Alternatives
Submit to the top 30 to 50 yourself with a submission tracker, or use automated submission where your own browser or an AI agent fills the forms and you approve each one. Our comparison of directory submission services for SaaS goes through the options.
Example
A founder pays for a "300 directories" package. The report lists 300 URLs, but a spot check shows 40 dead sites and dozens of general web directories with no traffic. About 60 listings are on real software directories. The same 60 would have taken two days by hand.
FAQ
How much does a directory submission service cost?
Commonly from about $50 to a few hundred dollars depending on the number of directories and whether copy is written per directory.
Can a submission service hurt my SEO?
If it uses link farms and spammy general directories at scale, yes, it can look like a link scheme. Ask for the list first.
How long does a submission service take?
Usually one to four weeks, then more weeks for directories to approve listings.
