What is automated directory submission?
Automated directory submission uses software, a browser extension or an AI agent to fill in directory submit forms instead of doing it by hand. Good tools adapt copy to each form and stop for CAPTCHAs, payments and approvals. Bad ones blast the same text to hundreds of low-quality sites.
What can be automated
Most of a submission is repetitive: open the form, read the fields, write copy that fits each field's limit, upload the logo and screenshots, pick a category, submit and record the result. Software can do all of that. What it shouldn't do is get past protections built to stop bots, pay for anything without approval, or invent facts about your product.
What we saw on real flows
Our agent walked the submit flows of 352 directories:
| Step | Directories |
|---|---|
| Account needed | 88 |
| Email verification code | 12 |
| CAPTCHA | 56 (35 Cloudflare Turnstile, 21 reCAPTCHA) |
| Ends at a payment page | 28 |
| Ends at a plan choice | 46 |
| Ends at a qualification check | 41 |
So roughly a fifth of directories need a human at some point, for a CAPTCHA, a payment decision or a badge. A good automated setup handles everything else and hands those steps to you.
Three approaches
- Form-filling extensions fill fields from saved data while you click through each site.
- Hosted services run submissions on their servers, which many directories block or flag.
- AI agents in your own browser (for example with Claude Code, Codex or Cursor) open each submit page, read the form, write copy for that audience and submit as you, in a browser that is already signed in to your accounts. Recorded paths for each directory tell the agent where the form is and where the flow ends.
What to avoid
Tools that promise hundreds of directories in minutes, solve CAPTCHAs for you, or submit to general web directories in bulk. Google's spam policies call automated link building a link scheme, and directories reject identical, low-effort submissions. See automated directory submission compared.
Example
A founder runs an agent through 60 directories over three evenings. It completes 47 on its own, pauses 9 times for a CAPTCHA or an email code she enters, and skips 4 that ended at a payment page she didn't approve. Every listing is logged with its status and URL.
FAQ
Is automated directory submission safe?
When it uses real directories, unique copy per site and stops for CAPTCHAs and payments, yes. Bulk blasting to low-quality sites is not.
Can an AI agent submit my product to directories?
Yes. Coding agents can drive a browser and fill forms. They work best with a directory list and the recorded submit path for each one.
Why do directories block automated submissions?
To stop spam. That's why good tools submit from your own browser and stop at bot checks instead of trying to bypass them.
