Glossary
What is referral traffic?
Referral traffic is visits that arrive by clicking a link on another website, such as a directory listing, a blog post, a forum thread or an AI assistant's citation. Analytics tools identify it from the referring domain. Directory listings and launch platforms show up here, which makes it the place to measure them.
How analytics detects it
When someone clicks a link, the browser usually sends the referring page to your site. Analytics groups those visits by referring domain. If the link has rel="noreferrer", or the visit comes from some apps, the referrer is missing and the visit looks like direct traffic.
Measuring directory referrals
- Check your referrals report for each directory's domain.
- Add UTM parameters to listing URLs where allowed.
- Compare sign-ups and paying customers by source, not just visits.
- Note results in your submission tracker.

AI referrals
Visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com and claude.ai appear as referrals. They're small for most sites but tend to convert well.
Example
A founder sees 40 referring domains in a month: 28 directories, 6 blogs, 4 forums and 2 AI assistants. Two directories and one AI assistant account for most sign-ups.
FAQ
Why does directory traffic show as direct?
The link may use noreferrer, or the visit came through an app. UTM tags fix it.
Is referral traffic good for SEO?
Not directly, but the links that send it may be backlinks.
How much referral traffic does a directory send?
From none to hundreds of visits a month, depending on the directory's traffic and your placement.
