Why do directory listings get rejected?

A listing rejection is a directory's decision not to publish a submitted product. Common reasons are a product that doesn't fit the directory, an incomplete form, a broken or unfinished site, a missing badge or link back, copied text, or a duplicate of an existing listing. Most rejections can be fixed and resubmitted.

The usual reasons

Reason Fix
Doesn't fit the niche Submit only where your product belongs
Incomplete form Fill every field, add real screenshots
Site broken or "coming soon" Launch the product first
Missing badge or link Add it where the directory checks
Copied description Write one for that audience
Duplicate Claim the existing listing instead
Spammy copy Remove superlatives and keyword stuffing

How common qualification checks are

When our agent recorded 352 submit flows, 41 ended at a qualification check, such as a badge, backlink or eligibility rule, and 46 at a plan choice where the free option had conditions. Those are the steps where most rejections start.

Example

A founder gets rejected by a directory that requires its badge "on your homepage". The badge is in his footer, but the footer is added by JavaScript, so the directory's checker never sees it. He moves the badge into the HTML the server sends, resubmits and is approved the same day. Our full guide to rejections covers more cases.

FAQ

Can I resubmit after a rejection?

Usually yes, after fixing the reason. Some directories ask you to reply to the rejection email instead.

Why was my listing rejected without a reason?

Some directories don't explain. Check fit, completeness, your site and the badge rule.

Do rejections hurt my SEO?

No. A rejected listing simply isn't published.
