What is the first comment on a Product Hunt launch?

The first comment is the maker's opening comment on a Product Hunt launch, posted right after it goes live. It tells the story behind the product: why it exists, who it's for, what's new and what feedback the team wants. Product Hunt says most Product of the Day winners had one.

What to put in it

  1. Who you are, in one line.
  2. The problem, in the words your users use.
  3. What the product does, with one concrete example.
  4. What's different from what people use today.
  5. A launch-day offer if you have one.
  6. A question that invites replies: what would you use this for, what's missing.

How long

Short enough to read on a phone without scrolling much: roughly 120 to 250 words. Use line breaks and a short list, not a wall of text. Write it like you'd explain the product to a friend.

Why it matters

Product Hunt says 70% of products that reached Product of the Day had a first comment from the maker. It sets the tone of the thread, gives people something to reply to, and shows editors that a real person is behind the launch.

Common mistake

Pasting the landing page copy. Visitors have already read your tagline and description; the first comment is where they expect the human story. Avoid buzzwords and a list of every feature. Our first comment template has examples that worked.

Example

"Hi Product Hunt, I'm Sam. I spent two years copying invoice data into spreadsheets by hand, so I built a tool that reads PDFs and fills the sheet for you. It handles messy scans and 40 languages. For launch week the first 100 users get double the free pages. What documents would you throw at it first?"

FAQ

When should I post the first comment?

Right after the launch goes live, before you share the link anywhere.

Can someone else write the first comment?

Any maker on the product can post it. It should come from a real person on the team.

Should the first comment include a discount?

If you have a launch offer, yes, in one line. It gives people a reason to try the product that day.
