Glossary
What is a paid listing?
A paid listing is a directory listing you pay for, either because the directory has no free route or because you choose a paid plan with extras. Prices range from a few dollars to a few hundred, one-time or recurring. In our checks, 51 of 352 directories were paid only.
Price models
- One-time fee for a permanent listing, the most common.
- Monthly or yearly membership to stay listed.
- Tiers (basic, featured, premium) with more placement, a dofollow link or newsletter mentions.
- Free with a badge, or paid without one.
How many directories charge
Of the 352 we checked, 129 are free with no catch, 86 are free with a badge, 79 are free with paid extras and 51 are paid only. The biggest directories mostly have free routes; paid-only listings are more common among AI tool directories.
Is it worth it?
Worth it when the directory's visitors are the people who buy your product and the price is below what a customer is worth. Not worth it when the main benefit is a link: paying for a followed link is buying a link under Google's spam policies, and a link from a small directory does little anyway.
Example
An accounting app compares two paid directories at a similar price. One is an accounting software marketplace with buyers comparing tools; the other is a general AI list with a few thousand visits. It pays for the first, which brings demo requests within a month, and skips the second.
