Glossary
What is a free directory listing?
A free listing is a directory listing you get without paying. Many come with conditions: a badge on your site, a link back, a long queue or a nofollow link. In our checks, 294 of 352 directories had a free route, and 178 of them gave a dofollow link.
The usual catches
| Catch | What it means |
|---|---|
| Badge or link back | Free only if their badge is on your site |
| Queue | Free, but weeks before it's live |
| Nofollow link | Free listing, no link equity |
| Upsells | Free basic listing, paid placement |
The numbers
Of 352 directories: 129 free with no catch, 86 free with a badge, 79 free with paid extras, 51 paid only and a few unconfirmed. 178 are both free and give a dofollow link. Our free directory list is sorted by traffic.
Making a free listing count
Fill every field, use real screenshots, write the description for that directory's audience, and pick the narrowest category that fits. Free listings get the same reviewers as paid ones, and complete listings are approved more often. Track each one so you know when it goes live and whether it sends visitors.
Example
A founder works through the top 30 free, dofollow directories in our list over a weekend. Twenty-six approve within a month. None needed a payment or a badge, and together they add 26 relevant links and listings that show up when people search for her product's category.
