What is a hunter on Product Hunt?
A hunter is the person who posts a product to Product Hunt. Anyone with an account can hunt a product, including its own makers. Hunters with large followings used to be sought after because their followers got notified, but most featured launches today are posted by the makers themselves.
Hunter vs maker
| Hunter | Maker | |
|---|---|---|
| Role | Posts the product | Built the product |
| Shown on the page | Yes, as hunter | Yes, as makers |
| Can be the same person | Yes | Yes |
Do you need a well-known hunter?
Not anymore. Followers of a hunter get notified about their hunts, which once gave a real head start. Product Hunt has since reduced how much that matters, and the tracker hunted.space reports that most featured launches are self-hunted. A big hunter can still help with advice and reach, but a complete launch page and an engaged audience matter more. Avoid anyone selling "hunts" with a promise of rankings.
How to self-hunt
Create the launch from your own account, add your co-founders as makers, schedule it for a date at 12:01 a.m. Pacific time, and prepare the launch page in advance. The guide on launching on Product Hunt walks through it.
Example
A solo founder asks a well-known hunter to post her app; he agrees but is travelling on launch day and can't reply to comments. She launches it herself a month later instead, replies to every comment within minutes, and places in the top five. The hunter's name was never the deciding factor; her presence on the day was.
FAQ
Should I find a hunter for my Product Hunt launch?
It's optional. Most featured products are self-hunted. Focus on the launch page and your audience.
Can a hunter be removed from my product page?
The hunter stays credited on that launch. Makers can be added or edited by the team.
