What is organic traffic?

Organic traffic is visits that come from unpaid search results, on Google, Bing and other search engines, as opposed to paid ads. It's the main measure of SEO results. It grows slowly but compounds: pages that rank keep bringing visitors without ongoing spend, unlike paid traffic that stops when the budget does.

Traffic types in analytics

Type From
Organic search Unpaid search results
Paid search Search ads
Referral Links on other sites, including directories
Direct Typed URLs, bookmarks, untracked sources
Social Social networks
Email Newsletters and campaigns

AI assistant visits usually show as referral (chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai) and sometimes as direct.

Why it compounds

A page that ranks keeps getting clicks every month. Each new page adds to the total, and links earned by any page strengthen the whole site. That's why SEO is slow at first and then grows faster.

What feeds it

  • Pages that answer what people search.
  • Backlinks from relevant sites, including directory listings.
  • Internal links that help pages get crawled and ranked.
  • Technical health: indexable, fast, consistent URLs.

Example

A startup's organic traffic is flat for four months, then doubles in two after its glossary and directory pages get indexed and start ranking for hundreds of long-tail searches.
