What is link earning?

Link earning means getting links without asking for them, because your page is the best source on something: original data, a useful tool, a clear definition, a well-known product. It's the opposite of link building through outreach. Earned links keep coming as long as the page stays useful and current.

Foundation studied 12,154 B2B content pages from 24 brands and found statistics pages earned 4.25 times their proportional share of referring domains, the highest of 15 formats, with glossary and definition pages second at 1.47 times. That's why we publish our own directory statistics and this glossary.

Why it works

Writers search for a stat or a definition while drafting, click a result that looks credible and link it. The page that ranks for "[topic] statistics" collects links from everyone writing about the topic. AI answer engines do the same when they cite a source for a number.

Keeping it going

Earned links depend on staying the best source. Update stats regularly, show the update date, keep sources linked and add new data. A page that goes stale gets replaced in rankings, and the links go to whoever replaced it.

Example

A payments startup publishes a page of 120 sourced payment statistics with a CSV download. Without any outreach, it earns links from 40 sites in six months, mostly bloggers and journalists citing a single number.

FAQ

Is link earning better than link building?

Earned links are safer and keep coming, but they take an asset worth citing. Most startups do both.

How long does it take to earn links?

Weeks to months, once the page ranks for the searches writers use.

Can a small site earn links?

Yes, with data nobody else has. Original numbers beat big brands' recycled ones.
