What is a referring domain?

A referring domain is a unique website that links to your site at least once. If one blog links to you 50 times, that's 50 backlinks but one referring domain. SEO tools and studies treat the number of referring domains as a stronger signal than the raw number of backlinks.

A sitewide link in a footer can create thousands of backlinks from one site. That's why tools show both numbers and why most SEOs watch referring domains.

Why they matter

Ahrefs' studies of millions of pages found that the number of referring domains correlates with Google rankings and organic traffic more than total backlinks do. Search engines value many independent sites vouching for you more than one site repeating itself. A new link from a domain that already links to you adds less than the first link from a new domain.

How to grow them

  • Directory listings: each real directory is a new referring domain. Of 352 we checked, 214 give a followed link.
  • Guest posts, podcast show notes, interviews.
  • Linkable assets such as statistics pages and free tools that others cite.
  • Unlinked mentions turned into links.
  • Integrations and partner pages.

Example

Two competitors each have 1,200 backlinks. One has 1,100 of them from a single partner's footer and 40 referring domains; the other has 410 referring domains. The second ranks for far more searches.

Referring domains by source

For a new product, the first referring domains usually come from a few places in a predictable order: directories and launch platforms in the first weeks, startup databases and review sites soon after, then podcasts, newsletters, guest posts and partners, and finally sites that cite your content or data. Tracking which group each new domain belongs to shows whether your link profile is broadening or stuck on one tactic.

FAQ

How many referring domains do I need to rank?

Look at the pages ranking for your target search. Their referring domain counts are the realistic bar.

Do nofollow links count as referring domains?

Tools count them, but Ahrefs' DR only counts domains with at least one followed link.

Where do I see my referring domains?

In Ahrefs, Semrush or Moz. Google Search Console's Links report lists top linking sites.

Does a new referring domain always help?

It helps most when the site is relevant and has some authority and traffic. Spam domains add a count but little value.
