Methodology
Sites. 312 startup and AI directories from our catalog that responded, and 196 well-known software, developer tool and AI companies (the list is in the CSV). Crawl. In October 2026 we fetched each site's /robots.txt, /llms.txt, /llms-full.txt and homepage over HTTPS with a standard browser user agent. Blocking. A bot counts as blocked when the robots.txt group that applies to it (its own group, or the * group if none) contains Disallow: / without an Allow: / override. Partial blocks of some paths don't count. CDN and firewall rules can block bots independently of robots.txt and aren't measured here. llms.txt. Counted only when the file returns 200 with Markdown-like text, not an HTML page. Markup. JSON-LD types read from the homepage HTML only. Definitions: AI crawler, GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended.

How many websites have llms.txt?
In our crawl, 59% of well-known software and AI companies and 47% of startup directories. Adoption across the whole web is much lower; these are tech-forward sites.
Do most sites block GPTBot?
Not in our sample: 9% of directories and 3% of companies fully block it.
Should I block AI crawlers?
Block training crawlers if you don't want content used for training; keep AI search crawlers allowed if you want to be cited in AI answers.
