What is a zero-click search?

A zero-click search is a search that ends on the results page without a click to any website, because the answer was shown directly: in a featured snippet, knowledge panel, AI Overview, calculator or local pack. A large share of searches end this way, which changes how pages get value from search.

Why it happens

Google and other engines answer more questions directly: featured snippets, knowledge panels, AI Overviews, unit conversions. For simple questions, the user is satisfied without visiting a site. Studies by SEO data companies have estimated that a majority of Google searches end without a click to the open web, with methodology differences between studies.

Which queries are affected

Definitions and quick facts Comparisons and research
Weather, time, conversions Product and pricing pages
Simple how-tos Tools and templates

How to still benefit

  • Be the source shown: your brand appears even without a click.
  • Offer depth the snippet can't: data, tools, examples, downloads.
  • Target queries where people need more than an answer.
  • Measure impressions and branded search, not only clicks.

Example

A glossary page's definition shows in a featured snippet for "what is a backlink". Clicks are modest, but impressions run in the thousands, and branded searches for the site rise as people remember the name.
