What is FAQPage schema?
FAQPage schema is schema.org structured data that marks up a list of questions and answers on a page. It once produced expandable FAQ rich results for many sites; since August 2023 Google shows them mainly for well-known government and health sites. The markup is still valid and helps machines read the Q&A.
Markup
{"@context": "https://schema.org", "@type": "FAQPage",
"mainEntity": [{"@type": "Question", "name": "Is X free?",
"acceptedAnswer": {"@type": "Answer", "text": "Yes, ..."}}]}
What changed
In August 2023 Google announced FAQ rich results would show only for well-known, authoritative government and health websites, and HowTo rich results would stop. FAQPage markup elsewhere no longer produces the expandable result, but isn't penalised.
Is it still worth it?
Cheap to add when you already have a visible FAQ. It labels questions and answers unambiguously for any system reading the page, which fits answer-first content. Don't add FAQs just to have markup; add them when readers ask those questions.
Rules
Only mark up questions and answers visible on the page, written by the site (not user-submitted Q&A, which uses QAPage), with no advertising in the answers.
Example
Every glossary page here has a visible FAQ with matching FAQPage markup, so the answers are clearly labelled for search engines and AI systems even without a rich result.
FAQ
Does FAQ schema still work?
The markup is valid; the rich result shows mostly for authoritative government and health sites.
Can FAQ schema hurt?
Not if it matches visible content. Mismatched markup violates guidelines.
FAQPage or QAPage?
FAQPage for questions you answer; QAPage for user questions with community answers.
