What is community-led growth?
Community-led growth is growth driven by a community around a product or topic: users help each other, share what they built, recommend the product and give feedback. The community becomes a channel for acquisition and retention. Developer tools and creator products often grow this way.
Owned vs joined communities
| Joined (others') | Owned | |
|---|---|---|
| Examples | Reddit, Indie Hackers, Slack groups, Discord servers | Your forum, Discord, user group |
| Speed | Immediate audience | Slow to build |
| Control | Their rules | Yours |
| Best for | Early users, feedback | Retention, advocates |
How it brings growth
Members answer each other's questions, post what they built, write templates and tutorials, and recommend the product when someone asks. Those recommendations and threads also become sources AI assistants read.
Starting small
Be useful in communities your buyers already use: answer questions in detail, share data, and mention your product only where it helps and the rules allow. Our pages on reddit self-promotion rules and Show HN cover two of the most common.
Example
A founder answers questions about directory submissions in two founder communities for three months. Members start recommending her tool when others ask, and those threads rank on Google for related searches.
