Glossary
What is a brand mention?
A brand mention is any reference to your company or product name on another website, social platform or forum, with or without a link. Mentions build awareness and help search engines and AI systems understand your brand as an entity. For AI answers, being mentioned in the right places matters as much as being linked.
Linked vs unlinked
A linked mention is also a backlink. An unlinked mention doesn't pass link equity, but it still tells readers and machines that you exist and what you're associated with. Google has patents describing "implied links", and AI models learn from text whether or not it's linked.
Why mentions matter for AI
When an AI assistant answers "what are the best tools for X", it relies on what the web says about tools for X: comparison articles, directory lists, review sites, forum threads. Products mentioned often and consistently in those sources get recommended. That makes mentions a core part of GEO.
Where to earn them
- Directory and review site listings.
- "Best of" and comparison articles in your category.
- Podcasts, newsletters and interviews.
- Community threads where people ask for recommendations.
- Partner and integration pages.
Example
A startup counts its mentions on the ten pages that rank for "best [category] tools". It appears on two; competitors appear on eight. Getting into four more lists over two months coincides with its first appearances in ChatGPT answers for that question.
FAQ
Do unlinked mentions help SEO?

How do I track brand mentions?
Alerts, social listening tools or SEO tools' mention features.
Are negative mentions harmful?
They can shape how people and AI describe you. Address real issues and respond where appropriate.
