What are category tags on a directory?

Category tags are the labels a directory uses to group listings, such as "Writing", "CRM" or "Developer tools". You choose them when you submit. They decide which category pages and searches your listing appears in, so they matter more for visibility than almost any other field.

Why they matter

Most directory traffic comes through category pages and internal search, not the homepage. Category pages on large directories also rank on Google for searches like "best AI meeting tools". If your product is tagged correctly, it appears where buyers are already looking.

How to choose

  • Narrow beats broad. One of 30 products in "Meeting notes" gets more views than one of 3,000 in "Productivity".
  • Match the buyer's words. Pick the category a buyer would browse, not the one that sounds impressive.
  • Use all the slots the form gives you, in order of relevance.
  • Don't mis-tag to reach a bigger category; reviewers reject it and visitors bounce.

Example

An AI tool for real estate listings is tagged "Real estate", "Copywriting" and "Marketing" instead of only "Productivity". It appears on three category pages with a few dozen products each, and the real estate page ranks on Google for "AI tools for real estate agents".

FAQ

How many category tags should I pick?

As many as the form allows, if each is accurate, ordered by relevance.

Can I change my category later?

On most directories you can edit tags after approval, or ask the team.

Do tags affect SEO?

Indirectly: they decide which category pages link to your listing, and those pages often rank.
