What is query fan-out?

Query fan-out is a technique AI search uses for complex questions: the system splits the question into many related sub-queries, runs them all and combines the results into one answer. Google has described AI Mode and AI Overviews using it, so pages can be cited for parts of a question they answer well.

How it works

Ask "which project management tool is best for a 10-person agency with client billing". A fan-out system might search for agency project management tools, tools with client billing, pricing for small teams, reviews, and comparisons, then synthesise. Each sub-search retrieves different pages.

What it means for content

  • Cover subtopics explicitly. A section titled "Pricing for small teams" can match a fan-out query even if the page targets something broader.
  • State facts plainly. Fan-out answers need extractable facts: prices, limits, integrations.
  • Breadth across pages helps. A set of linked pages covering a topic in depth, like a glossary or a content cluster, offers more matches.

Example

A page about directory submission has sections on cost, time, CAPTCHAs, badges and automation. In AI Mode, it's cited for the "how long does it take" part of a broader question about launching a SaaS, a query it never ranked for directly.

FAQ

Who uses query fan-out?

Google has described it for AI Mode and AI Overviews; other AI search engines use similar multi-query retrieval.

Can I see fan-out queries?

Not directly. Search Console shows queries, but fan-out sub-queries aren't listed separately.

Does it change keyword research?

It rewards covering related subtopics, not just one head term.
