What is programmatic SEO?

Programmatic SEO is creating many search-targeted pages from a template and a dataset, such as one page per city, integration, comparison or directory. It works when each page carries unique, useful data for its query. Thin pages that only swap a keyword risk being treated as scaled content abuse.

Examples that work

Site type Page pattern Unique data per page
Travel Flights from X to Y Prices, routes, schedules
SaaS Integrations with X What the integration does, setup
Marketplaces Product category in city Real listings
Directories Profile of each directory Traffic, DR, cost, link type, submit flow

Our 352 directory profiles are programmatic: one template, filled from a dataset of hand-checked facts, recorded submit flows and written notes per directory.

Where it goes wrong

Google's spam policies define scaled content abuse as generating many pages primarily to manipulate rankings and not to help users, regardless of whether they're made by automation, AI or people. Warning signs: pages that differ only by a swapped keyword, no data a user couldn't get elsewhere, near-duplicate text, and pages nobody would bookmark.

Quality checks

  1. Would this page be useful if search engines didn't exist?
  2. Does each page have data or insight unique to its subject?
  3. Is the text varied where it should be, not just the nouns?
  4. Are there hubs and internal links so every page is reachable?
  5. Are thin pages left unpublished or noindexed until they have enough data?

Indexing

Large programmatic sets often sit in "Discovered, currently not indexed" until internal links and quality signals convince Google they're worth crawling. Hubs, category pages, links from strong pages and sitemaps all help.

Example

A site creates 5,000 "best X in [city]" pages with the same text and no listings. Few get indexed and traffic later drops sitewide. A competitor creates 400 city pages, each with real listings, prices and local notes, and they rank steadily.

FAQ

Is programmatic SEO spam?

Not by itself. It's spam when pages exist only to rank and offer little value.

Can I use AI to write programmatic pages?

Google doesn't ban AI content; it judges value. Unique data and review matter more than how text was produced.

How many programmatic pages should I launch at once?

There's no rule, but each must be useful, linked and indexable. Quality matters more than pace.

How do I get programmatic pages indexed?

Link them from hubs and strong pages, list them in sitemaps, and make each page clearly useful; Google crawls weakly linked pages slowly.
